Method of Donation
Joyful (Mental Health) Foundation is a charitable organization exempt from tax under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance of Hong Kong, with approval number 91/7268.
Individuals or corporations whose total donations in a relevant year of assessment (from 1 April to 31 March of the following year) amount to HKD$100 or more are eligible to apply for tax deduction. Please note that donations used for purchasing charity sale items, workshop/course fees, or lottery/raffle tickets do not qualify for tax deduction.
The organization will issue a tax-exempt receipt after each donation (for monthly donations, receipts will be issued annually in April). The receipt will clearly state the name of the organization, the donor’s name, and the donation amount. If you plan to claim tax deduction, the name provided by the donor must match the name of the taxpayer.
For Individuals, the total amount of donations must be not less than HK$100. Within a year of assessment, the total deductible amount is 35% of your assessable income; and a single donation can only be claimed for deduction once, either under salaries tax or personal assessment. For example, if an individual’s salary income is HKD$400,000, the maximum allowable deduction for approved charitable donations would be HKD$140,000 (HKD$400,000 × 35%). If the total donation exceeds this limit, the excess amount can be claimed by the spouse. For corporate, the total deductible amount within a year of assessment is 35% of the assessable profits of the enterprise.
To claim a tax deduction for charitable donations, donors must fill in the total donation amount for the relevant year of assessment in their Individual Tax Return (BIR60). When submitting the tax return, there is no need to attach supporting documents, but donors must retain the receipts for at least 7 years in case of future inspection by the Inland Revenue Department.
